Retrofitting for Energy Efficiency
Until recently many landscape lighting designers resisted installing LED bulbs in their fixtures due to the harshness of the illumination provided. Recent advances in LED technologies however has seen the introduction of many new varieties of bulbs into the industry that can match the appearance of traditional halogen or incandescent bulbs. While the new bulbs appear identical, they are vastly different in energy consumption. Compare a 35 or 50 watt halogen bulb to a visually identical 6 or 7 watt LED bulb and you can imagine the savings spread out over your entire landscape lighting system.
By installing LED bulbs you will be reducing the demand on your system which will effectively create more capacity in your transformer. If your transformer was operating at or near it's maximum with halogen bulbs, by installing LEDs you'll be opening up more capacity which will enable you to add more fixtures to your design, if you so desire, without the expense of a larger transformer.
Retrofitting an existing landscape lighting system with LED bulbs will greatly improve the energy efficiency of the system, can easily be done in a day, and the only difference will be in the appearance of your hydro bill.
